SEIU Calls for Democrats to Unite Around Obama

“Senator Obama’s commanding win in North Carolina and close showing in Indiana means he is clearly the Democratic nominee for President,” said Anna Burger, SEIU Secretary-Treasurer. “We’ve had a long process and the outcome is now clear. The Democratic Party should come together to focus on winning in November.”

André Carson in Indiana’s 7th district and were closely watching the outcome for Jill Long Thompson in the race for Governor. With less than a week to go before Indiana’s Democratic Primary on Tuesday, May 6, SEIU members are stepping up their efforts on behalf of Senator Obama for President. Starting today, SEIU will be up on the air statewide urging voters to support Barack Obama on May 6. The ad is part of an extensive campaign that SEIU members are waging to get out the vote for Obama in the remaining days before the primary.

In addition to campaigning for Obama, SEIU members are also going door to door and making phone calls on behalf of Jill Long Thompson, candidate for Governor, and Congressman André Carson in Indiana’s 7th District. Read More.

SEIU members and leaders responded strongly to statements by congressional Democrats that health care reform is unlikely in the new Congress.

“This is a moment of change, and voters sent these politicians to Washington to get results, not to make excuses,” said SEIU President Andy Stern. “In every poll, in nearly every evening newscast, in every state across the country, we see the effects of America’s health care crisis and voters’ demands for a solution. SEIU Secretary-Treasurer Anna Burger is joining SEIU members in a final push to help Barack Obama win the Pennsylvania primary and clinch the Democratic nomination. Burger, a Pennsylvania native, will visit worksites and canvass alongside SEIU members. On primary day, Burger will kick off a Philadelphia rally with SEIU members and other Change to Win members before they fan out across the city to get voters to the polls for Obama. Read More »
