Candidates for Michigan’s 7th Congressional District Walk a Day with SEIU Health Care Workers
Two candidates for Michigan’s 7th Congressional District recently got to experience firsthand what it’s like to be a health care worker by participating in SEIU’s “Walk a Day in My Shoes” program.
State Senator and Democratic candidate Mark Schauer spent the day with health care worker and SEIU Healthcare Michigan member Annette Freeman at the Lenawee Medical Care Facility, a long-term care facility in Adrian, MI.
Schauer’s day began at 7 a.m., when he helped Freeman prepare breakfast and change beds for residents. Schauer assisted Freeman with a variety of activities before heading back to the kitchen to serve lunch until the end of the shift.
Fellow Democratic candidate Sharon Renier spent a day working alongside SEIU member and homecare worker Denise Mazuk, who cares for five people in the Battle Creek, MI area. Renier accompanied Mazuk to multiple homes, assisting with her duties and providing care and feeding to her patients.
SEIU Member Denise Mazuk: “I volunteered to do the Walk a Day because the people I care for have needs so much bigger than me and I know it would help a lot to have lawmakers on our side. It’s great to see that a potential Congresswoman would go out of her way to see what my life is like.”
